SHOWCASE: LONE STAR PASTEL SOCIETY

Lone Star Pastel Society

Purpose

To promote public awareness and appreciation for using soft pastels as a fine art painting medium. Monthly meetings are held from September through May to which the public is also invited. Programs at the meetings range from an artist demonstration, paint-a-rounds, marketing art or copyright laws to whatever subject that may be helpful to artists in the use of soft pastel. Workshops, paint-outs, museum trips and member exhibitions are also planned.

Society History and Activities

Lone Star Pastel Society was established in May 1995. Ben Konis was an honorary member of our Society. A Master pastelist, Ben’s vibrantly colored landscapes, portraits and still lifes are beautiful examples of the soft pastel medium. His paintings have received numerous awards and he has appeared in many art publications, including International Artist, Pastel Artist International and The Pastel Journal magazines. Ben has conducted many informative, helpful workshops locally, nationally, and internationally.

Honorary membership was given posthumously to Frank Reaugh (1860-1945). He was the earliest pastel artist in this area. His impressionistic paintings captured the beauty of the Panhandle Plains and Palo Duro Canyon. Many of his works are on permanent display in the art gallery of the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas. Our first National Juried Show was held in Sept. 2003. It was well received, with participating artists from 14 states.
