The Pastel Painters of Maine (PPOM) was established in 1999 by a group of artists interested in soft pastels to promote the medium of soft pastel, to unite local and regional artists, and to heighten the public’s awareness of the medium. Since that time, PPOM has grown to more than 100 members with international juried shows being held yearly since 2000.
Society History and Activities
A weekly “paint-in” for portrait sketching is held on Fridays, and occasional “paint-outs” are offered during the summer. In conjunction with the annual juried show, PPOM offers a one- or two-day workshop conducted by the judge, a well-known national or local pastellist. Two non-juried Member Shows are mounted annually.
Membership Information
The membership is primarily soft pastellists from four New England states and Montreal, Canada. Membership is $20/year and PPOM meets on the third Thursday of the month at River Tree Center for the Arts, 35 Western Avenue, Kennebunk, Maine.
Benefits of membership include discounts at workshops, juried shows and member shows; newsletter; paint-outs and paint-ins; liaison with Maine Arts Commission and IAPS. At our meetings we discuss ways to promote pastels, have demonstrations on methods and materials, critique new paintings, plan our annual PPoM Inter/National Juried Show for Pastels Only, and plan our annual non-juried Members Only Show.
