Purpose

The purpose of our organization is to provide an important channel of communication and an environment in which pastel artists may flourish.

Society History and Activities

The Society was established in 1987 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting pastel as a medium in the Southeast. We now have over 250 members from all over the United States and other nations throughout the world.

Meetings are held Sept. through May and include demonstrations on such topics as framing, how to pack art for shipment, what to take along when painting en plein air, preparation of slides, etc. Member or guest artists also demonstrate their personal painting techniques and share their knowledge. We have a newsletter which keeps us up-to-date concerning what’s going on in the world of pastel. One meeting each year is dedicated to a critique of members’ paintings.

An International Exhibition is held every other year and alternates with our Members’ Exhibition. This exhibition is open to all artists and is juried by a PSA Master Pastellist. The location varies but is held in Georgia.

SPS also sponsors workshops in conjunction with each show.
